About this spot

Animae is where San Diego's power-lunch crowd brings their out-of-town investors to close deals over wagyu fried rice in a room designed to impress.

While competitors in the Gaslamp stick to either straightforward sushi or coastal seafood, Animae commits fully to the high-stakes Asian fusion lane—the kind of place where beef tendon salad ($18+) sits comfortably next to A5 wagyu and crispy rice apps, and nobody blinks at the bill. This is Brian Malarkey's luxury play, and it shows in every detail: the dramatic bar setup, the attentive-but-not-hovering service, the cocktails that lean sweet and Instagram-ready.

The move here is cold plates first—reviewers consistently flag the scallops and tuna crispy rice as worth the premium, and the beet salad surprises people who think they don't do beets. The beef tendon salad runs divisive (you either get it or you don't), but tables that order it call it their favorite. For mains, the wagyu fried rice and short rib earn repeat mentions, though expect luxury-sized portions at luxury prices.

Bar seating works surprisingly well if you're solo or didn't book ahead—servers like Nicole and the bartenders run a tight, collaborative operation that keeps drinks filled and pacing smooth. The room skews date night and special occasion, but the bar crowd pulls in enough regulars to keep it from feeling too precious.

Downsides: It's expensive even by Gaslamp standards, and the sweetness level on cocktails (especially anything with ube) runs higher than some expect. Parking is downtown parking—valet or nearby garage, factor in $20-30. Reservations strongly recommended for dinner; walk-ins get offered bar seats when available.

This isn't your neighborhood Tuesday spot. It's where you go when the occasion—or the expense account—calls for it, and you want a room that matches the ambition of the menu.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I need a reservation, or can I just walk in?
Reservations are smart since this is a popular fine-dining spot in Gaslamp Quarter, but walk-ins can get seated at the bar with immediate availability—that's actually where solo diners and couples often end up having the best time. The bar staff here knows what they're doing, so don't feel like you're settling.
What should I order first?
Start with the Beef Tendon Salad (it's the table favorite for a reason) and the Tuna Crispy Rice, then move into the Wagyu Fried Rice or Short Rib for mains. The scallops are genuinely exceptional, and the Beet Salad delivers incredible flavor—basically, nothing on this menu is filler.
Is this good for a special occasion or date night?
Absolutely—it's designed for exactly that. The atmosphere is immaculate, the service is notably attentive, and the food execution justifies the high price tag. People specifically come here for anniversaries and important dinners, and it consistently delivers.
What are the cocktails like?
They're worth ordering. The Old Fashioned is solid, and the Ube is on the sweeter side if you go that direction. The bar staff is collaborative and genuinely good at their job—ask for a recommendation and you'll be fine.
Do you have good options if I'm vegetarian?
Yes—vegetarian-forward is one of their strong suits. The Beet Salad and Cucumbers are standouts, and they clearly take that commitment seriously across the menu, so you won't be choosing between leftovers.
Is parking a hassle in Gaslamp Quarter?
Gaslamp Quarter parking is tight but manageable; there's street parking and nearby garages. Plan to arrive with a little extra time or use valet if the venue offers it—you don't want to stress before a nice dinner.
What's the dress code like?
This is fine dining, so dress up—business casual at minimum, but people typically wear something you'd actually iron. It's not aggressively formal, but the room's aesthetic demands respect.
Is this tourist-friendly, or more of a locals' spot?
It's both, honestly. It's a neighborhood staple that locals genuinely love, but it absolutely welcomes tourists—it's in a high-traffic area and built for that. Everyone gets the same exceptional service regardless.

The venue is stunning. Immaculate detail to everything. Very high end atmosphere. Server was Bonnie and she was exceptional. We got the below Cocktails - old fashion - Ube (on the sweeter side) Cold plates - scallops - absolutely divine. These were so perfect and the dill was such a nice touch. Hot plates - Taiwanese chicken - divine and the sauce really made this dish. The chicken was extremely tender as well. Mains - lobster Palabok - noodles were a bit hard and the lobster amount was very minimal definitely wouldn’t get it again - tomahawk - incredible. Juicy and perfectly cooked and the sauce paired very nicely with it too. Dessert - sticky rice crème brûlée - very good I did find it a bit too tart for my liking very lemony taste but my fiancé loved it. For two people this was plenty and our total came to $332 (4 total cocktails) and we tipped 20% Truly magical place and will be back because the Kare Kare I am regretting I didn’t get.

Our experience at Animae was beyond amazing! A huge shoutout to our server, Deanna, who was absolutely fantastic. She was incredibly attentive, kept our drinks filled, offered great recommendations, and was so friendly throughout the evening. The atmosphere and ambiance are "such a vibe." The decor is elegant, classy, and intimate. While the music was a bit on the loud side, it didn't detract from the experience. The food, however, was the real star. We split our meals two ways: half the table shared everything family-style, while the other half shared sides but ordered individual entrees. In my opinion, sharing everything is definitely the way to go here! Every dish was flavorful and spot on the short ribs, pork tomahawk, mantou buns (my personal favorite!), beet salad, cucumbers, chicken, fried rice, and lamb chops were all outstanding. The only slight miss mentioned by a few was the beef belly, but for my side of the table, everything was perfection. We were too stuffed for dessert, but I’m already salivating thinking about my next visit!

We had a phenomenal experience here tonight. We didn’t have a reservation but the hosts said immediate seating was available at the bar so we chose that. Nicole was our main server and she was fantastic. The ladies behind the bar all worked together to ensure we were taken care of though. We chose to order a variety of small plates and we were blown away by the dishes and individual flavors.

Amazing service, atmosphere, everyone who comes to San Diego should come to this restaurant. We loved every dish we tried (doesn’t happen often). I recommend you to try wontons, wagyu fried rice, crispy potatoes and shortrib (I usually don’t like shortribs, but this one was phenomenal). Sticky rice crème brûlée was also pretty good.
