About this spot

Extraordinary Desserts is San Diego's go-to for desserts so architectural they look Instagram-ready but taste like actual pastry, not fondant props.

**What makes this different:** While most dessert spots in the Gaslamp lean into late-night sugar rushes or tourist-trap presentation over substance, Extraordinary Desserts operates like a proper European pastry kitchen that just happens to be downtown. These cakes aren't Instagram bait—they're built on technique. The macadamia cake layers caramel without drowning you in sweetness. The bread pudding balances richness with restraint. Reviewers keep using the word "balanced," which is rare praise for dessert.

The Union Street location sprawls compared to the tighter Bankers Hill spot, giving you breathing room most Gaslamp cafes don't offer. Around 3 PM, the place empties out completely—prime time if you want takeout without a wait or a quiet table to camp at with coffee and cake. The vibe skews elegant without being stuffy: calm background music, edible flowers on everything, the kind of place that works for Valentine's Day splurges and solo Tuesday afternoon breaks equally well.

Expect to spend around $15 per person for dessert and a drink. The double espresso holds up, and the cafe mocha surprised a skeptical reviewer by leaning chocolatey instead of syrupy sweet. Parking in the Gaslamp means meters or paid lots—factor that into your timing.

**The downside:** Prices run high for what's ultimately cake and coffee. That $30 Valentine's Day tab for two desserts stings if you're not ready for it. And while the cakes look showstopping, a few reviewers noted the caramel can overpower more delicate flavors if you're not strategic about what you order.

**The move:** Hit it mid-afternoon for zero crowds, order the macadamia cake if you want something rich but not cloying, and pair it with the cafe mocha instead of expecting sweetness bombs.

Common questions

FAQ

Is Extraordinary Desserts actually worth the price?
Yes, but go in knowing you're paying for craft and presentation, not volume. Expect to spend around $15–$30 per person depending on what you order. The cakes and pastries are legitimately well-balanced—they won't knock you over with sugar the way chain dessert spots do. Best strategy: treat it as an occasional splurge for dates, anniversaries, or when you actually want dessert to feel special.
When should I go to avoid a wait?
Hit them around 3 PM on weekday afternoons—the place empties out and takeout moves fast. Evenings and weekends can get busy, especially for dates or special occasions, so either arrive early or call ahead. If you're just grabbing something to go, you'll almost always have a short line.
What should I order on my first visit?
Start with one of their cakes—the macadamia cake and other signature options come highly recommended. Pair it with a good espresso or their café mocha (it's more chocolatey than sweet, which works beautifully). The bread pudding also gets solid reviews. Pro tip: ask the staff for recommendations; they know the balance of each dessert.
Is there outdoor seating, and what's the vibe like?
Yes, they have outdoor seating in the Gaslamp Quarter location—great for people-watching or a casual date night. Inside, expect calm music and an elegant-but-relaxed atmosphere that works equally well for anniversaries or just popping in for coffee and cake. It's not stuffy; it's genuinely pleasant.
Can I bring kids, and are there options beyond desserts?
Absolutely kid-friendly. While it's primarily a dessert spot, they serve lunch and dinner with vegetarian options, plus beer and wine for adults. Kids can eat lighter fare before diving into the sweet stuff, or just make it a dessert outing—totally works either way.
Do they do takeout and delivery, or should I dine in?
Both. Takeout is seamless and quick during off-peak hours, and delivery is available. But if you have time, sitting down inside is worth it for the calm vibe. The space is surprisingly spacious and designed to linger without pressure.
What about parking in Gaslamp Quarter?
Street parking can be tight in the neighborhood, especially evenings and weekends. There are paid lots nearby, but expect to hunt a bit. If you're planning a sit-down visit, give yourself extra time for parking or consider it during slower afternoon hours when spots open up.

Recently went here with my wife for some Valentine's Day dessert. So many delicious looking items to choose from. It's a little pricey for desserts but definitely worth the occasional splurge. It was around $30 for the 2 items we chose. I recommend this location because they have plenty of indoor seating unlike the one near Balboa Park.

Overall, the double espresso was good, the macadamia cake was good but maybe less caramel, the cafe mocha was good as well actually- the girl at the register was right, it’s not sweet but chocolatey. I was very pleasantly surprised! 😊 The bread pudding was good too. The tiramisu cake was a little sweet. I’d rather the desserts be a little smaller and cheaper. These are huge, but beautifully presented. Also, I gave 2 stars for service because the girl who was serving the orders was rude (we stopped by for the first time this evening). The atmosphere/decor is modern minimalist- not a fan because it’s not cozy or fancy. 😕

Came here for some dessert takeout around 3 PM. The restaurant is pretty empty during that time and there’s no wait for takeouts. Love their desserts, especially their cakes. It is not super sweet, but with a balanced taste between ingredients. I also like their pastries as well. Everything’s on the price of your side but if you have the time to sit down, have a cup of tea or coffee with their dessert it is definitely worth it.

First time visiting this location. First thing I noticed is the amount of space that’s inside. Very calm music playing on the inside and it is overall a wonderful vibe. I have been to the Bankers Hill location and I prefer that one just because the chances of finding a free parking on the road is higher there vice at the little Italy location, where almost certainly you have to pay for parking on the street. I ordered the original crunchy chocolate chip cookie, and the del leche cheesecake which were absolutely delicious and amazing! No amount of words can describe the flavor of the cheesecake. It was just deliciously stunning. I highly recommend and I’ll be visiting the nearest extraordinary dessert restaurant near me again.

Extraordinary Desserts truly lives up to its name - the pastries and cakes are stunning, delicious, and clearly crafted with a lot of care. Every dessert I tried was rich, balanced, and beautifully presented. The ambiance is elegant and perfect for a treat-yourself outing. I’m giving it lower stars instead of 5 because the staff wasn’t as helpful as I expected. A bit more friendliness and guidance would have made the experience feel more welcoming. Still, the desserts are outstanding, and I’d go back to a different location for another sweet indulgence.
