“The Waves Taco Club operates like a neighborhood spot that accidentally landed in the Gaslamp—chill vibes, no line, actual breathing room.”
**What makes this different:** While Tacos El Gordo pulls the late-night crowds with Tijuana-style chaos and most Gaslamp joints lean into the party district energy, The Waves stays weirdly calm. Even at prime dinner hours, you're not fighting for space or shouting your order. It's the rare downtown taco joint where you can actually sit down, take your time, and not feel rushed out the door.
The space leans into surf-meets-Mexico vibes with art-covered walls that give you something to look at while you wait (though you won't wait long). Staff runs friendly without the performative downtown hustle—they'll walk you through the menu, suggest the battered white fish if you ask, and get food out fast without making it feel like a transaction.
The battered white fish taco is the move here—light, crispy, none of that heavy beer-batter situation. Chipotle shrimp brings actual heat. Carne asada does its job. Portions hit that sweet spot where one person feels satisfied with three tacos, but you're not overstuffed. Burritos pack flavor without the California burrito bloat you'll find at most Gaslamp spots.
Pricing stays reasonable for the location—$15 gets you three tacos, which won't break you after you've already dropped money on drinks elsewhere. They do lunch through late-night, take delivery orders, and somehow maintain the same energy whether it's 5pm or midnight.
The catch: if you're chasing that Tijuana street-cart authenticity or want the chaos of shoulder-to-shoulder taco ordering, this isn't your spot. The Waves trades that intensity for space, speed, and the ability to actually have a conversation while you eat. For Gaslamp, that's the differentiator.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Insanely good tacos, really friendly staff, reasonable prices and no lines both times even during prime meal hours. Came by myself the first time and got the battered white fish and chipotle shrimp tacos, and I thought I was having a religious moment eating the chipotle shrimp. It’s just sooo good and perfectly cooked and saucy (very messy tho you’ve been warned). Dragged my family here two days later after hyping this place up and I was nervous it’d fall short of the very high expectations but they loved it too. We basically tried their entire taco menu. Favorites were the garlic shrimp, chipotle shrimp, and blackened salmon, but everything was amazing. Can’t wait to come back again.

Super chill. Great tacos. Friendly service. Grabbed an early dinner right after work about 5pm. Quiet atmosphere and very fast service. Had the battered white fish and carne asada. While both were good, the battered white fish taco was absolutely delicious - definitely the star of the show. Loved the little salsa bar. Portions were great. Left full and happy.

I ordered tacos for $15. Presentation and taste were a 10/10 — really good, authentic flavor. The portion size was perfect for me, though it might feel a bit small for others. Service and ambience were both 10/10. It truly feels like an authentic Mexican taquería. I would definitely come back.

Delicious food with great flavor and generous portions. The staff is very friendly, and the prices are quite fair, especially considering the restaurant’s location in downtown San Diego. The atmosphere is pleasant and lively, with good music and tasteful decoration that gives the place a warm and inviting feel. The dishes are well-prepared and nicely presented, showing attention to detail and authentic flavor. It’s an excellent spot whether you’re a local looking for a nice meal or a tourist exploring the city. The service is efficient, and the overall experience feels relaxed yet well-organized. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good food, a friendly environment, and reasonable prices right in the heart of San Diego.
