About this spot

Señor Taquero survives in Gaslamp not by chasing the party crowd but by serving actual breakfast to people who live here.

**What sets it apart:** While most Gaslamp spots cater to tourists looking for late-night tacos between bars, Señor Taquero opens early and feeds the neighborhood before the district wakes up. You won't find tableside guac or craft cocktails—just a tiny counter-serve joint cranking out breakfast burritos the size of your forearm for under $10. The Waves stays calm, sure, but Señor Taquero stays cheap and opens when people actually need breakfast.

This is a literal hole-in-the-wall—eight seats max, kitchen heat bleeding into the dining area, fan working overtime. The grill sits maybe six feet from where you're eating, so morning shifts get warm but manageable. Later in the day when downtown heats up, it's less pleasant. Go early or grab takeout.

The California burrito earns its reputation with cheese-coated crispy potatoes that don't turn to mush halfway through. Corn tortillas come handmade—they hold together without tearing, which sounds basic until you've eaten at a dozen spots where they don't. The salsa bar has enough range to fix whatever heat level you need.

Practical notes: Cash moves faster, though they take cards. The fan noise isn't loud—just constant white noise from the kitchen. Service is quick and zero-fuss; don't expect conversation, expect your food. Three-taco specials rotate daily and usually beat the regular menu on value. If you're visiting Gaslamp and need actual food instead of bar snacks, this is the move. If you're staying downtown and want breakfast that doesn't cost $18, this is your spot.

Common questions

FAQ

Is there parking nearby?
Parking in Gaslamp Quarter can be tight—street spots fill up quick during peak hours. Your best bet is the nearby parking garages or lots on Broadway. Go early or plan for a short walk; most people treat Señor Taquero as a quick stop anyway.
Can I walk in, or do I need a reservation?
Walk-ins only—no reservations. It's a tight hole-in-the-wall spot, so expect a short wait during breakfast and lunch rushes. Early morning (before 9am) or mid-afternoon (2-4pm) are your sweet spots to slip in without waiting.
What should I order on my first visit?
Start with the breakfast burritos—they're massive and the salsas are the real deal. If you're going for lunch or dinner, hit the California Burrito (loaded with crispy potatoes and cheese) or grab the daily special: three tacos for a few bucks that punch way above their price tag.
Is this place good for kids?
Absolutely. It's casual, quick, and the menu is simple enough for picky eaters. Fair warning: the kitchen grill is right there by the seating, so it gets warm—but that's part of the charm and keeps things lively.
What's the vibe like—is it sit-down or grab-and-go?
It's small and tight with a no-frills, no-nonsense vibe. You can sit at the counter solo or grab a tiny table, but it's designed for people who want real food fast, not a lingering dinner. Locals and tourists mix here without pretense.
Do they have options for dietary restrictions?
They work with fresh ingredients made to order, so modifications are doable. Come prepared to ask questions at the counter—the staff is helpful but busy, and there's no printed dietary guide. Corn tortillas are available for the gluten-conscious.
When's the best time to avoid a crowd?
Early breakfast (before 9am) or late afternoon (after 3pm) keeps waits minimal. If you're a night owl, they serve late and the after-work crowd tends to thin out by 9pm. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.

Small hole in the wall, blink and you’ll miss it. But the staff was kind, the Breakfast burritos were big! Salsas were delicious. The place was a little warm due to the grill being by the seating area, but early morning wasn’t too much of an issue.

If you know, you know. Señor Taquero is that perfect little hole-in-the-wall spot with unreal food and prices that make you double check the receipt. Everything is packed with flavor. Service is no-frills, but that’s part of the charm. You’re here for the food — and it’s flawless.

My wife and I were visiting the area and were walking around looking for something to eat and we stumbled upon this place. It's very small inside and there's a fan blowing so that's where the moderate noise comes from. We got the 2 taco plate - any 2 tacos with rice and beans. We got 3 fish tacos and 1 shrimp taco. The tacos were great. The beans were good. The rice was unimpressive. We'd eat there again and again to try all the different menu items they offer. I do recommend this place.

California Burrito Rating (15) Embarking on a quest to rank San Diego's California Burritos!
Stop #15: Señor Taquero The Product:
A large burrito with crispy potatoes. The crunch and flavor of the potatoes might be thanks to the cheese coating them—absolutely delicious. Adding sour cream to the filling was a nice touch, and the marinated meat was cooked well. I'd call this a California Burrito for your everyday lunch—nothing overly creative. They offer a selection of chilled sauces, which were surprisingly tasty. The cost is around $14, which is about average for the city. 08 out of 10 Service:
Minimal but friendly interaction. 06 out of 10 Atmosphere:
The interior features some elements of Mexican culture, but they don’t quite create a cohesive vibe. With just six people in the dining area, it already felt cramped. 06 out of 10

Great little hole in the wall restaurant. Fresh, quick, made to order, the corn tortillas melt in your mouth yet don’t break apart while eating. Hot sauce and add ons tray has everything you need, mild or spicy hot. Great daily specials, three tacos $8. Very filling.
