About this spot

The Blind Burro is the Gaslamp's pre-game headquarters—a Baja-styled spot steps from Petco where the margaritas are strong and the patio stays packed.

**What makes this different:** While La Puerta morphs from brunch spot to nightclub and The Waves keeps things weirdly calm, The Blind Burro exists in one gear: game day energy. This is where you come before or after Padres games, when you want Baja-style tacos and a double house margarita without the chaos of a full nightclub scene. It's a block from the stadium, which means it gets absolutely slammed on game nights, but the kitchen holds up better than most Gaslamp spots that lean hard into the party district.

The food skews coastal Mexican—lobster tacos, calamari that reviewers consistently mention, street corn that runs a bit sour but pairs well with the margaritas. Skip the flavored margs; the double house with no extra flavor is the move. The tacos average $23, and locals say the $2 upgrade for street corn over rice is worth it.

The space itself is all bare wood and surf-meets-Mexico energy, decorated enough to feel intentional without trying too hard. The patio is where you want to be—outdoor seating that catches the downtown vibe without feeling like you're eating in a parking lot. Service slows down during Comic-Con and game days (because of course it does), but servers generally keep up even when the place turns into a zoo.

Parking: You're downtown, so park at a garage and walk. Wait times: Expect a crowd two hours before first pitch and right after the final out. Come off-peak if you actually want a quiet meal, though that's not really what this spot is built for.

Common questions

FAQ

Is The Blind Burro a good spot to grab food before or after a Padres game?
Absolutely — it's literally a block from the stadium, so you can time a meal or drinks around first pitch or a post-win celebration. Just know that walk-in traffic spikes around game time, so either arrive early or grab a reservation if you want to dodge the chaos.
Can I make a reservation, or do I need to just walk in?
They take reservations, which is smart if you're coming during busy periods (Padres games, Comic-Con, Friday nights). For casual lunch or late-night, walk-ins usually work fine — but calling ahead eliminates guesswork.
What should I order first?
The lobster tacos and calamari are standouts. Skip the margaritas if you want variety — reviewers noted the different flavors taste pretty similar, so stick with the Double House with no extra flavor instead. The street corn is worth the $2 upcharge; it's better than rice.
What are the parking options nearby?
Gaslamp Quarter has street parking and paid lots, but they fill up fast on game days and weekends. This is downtown San Diego, so expect to circle or use a parking app — arrive early if you're driving.
Is this place good for vegetarians?
Yes — they have vegetarian options on the menu, though the spot is known for seafood and meat. You won't go hungry, but it's not vegetarian-focused; just check the menu or ask your server what works best.
When's the best time to visit if I want to avoid a long wait?
Avoid arriving right before or after Padres games, or during major events like Comic-Con unless you've reserved. Weekday lunch or early dinner (before 6pm) tends to be calmer; late-night is lively but can get crowded as a party continuation spot.
Is there outdoor seating?
Yes, they have outdoor seating available, which is great for soaking in the Gaslamp vibe on a nice San Diego evening.
What's the vibe like?
It's a rowdy, fun spot that works as both a casual date-night place and a pre-show or post-game party joint. During busy times it can feel like 'a zoo,' so come ready for noise and energy, not an intimate dinner.

Stopped in to get some food before an even at the stadium and im glad we did. At first when I walked in, it was a bit crowded but lively and looked like people there were having fun. The server took me to a table in the very back where a man was blocking me from getting in.. she asked him to move and he refused and they both looked at me so I just told her I'll wait for a table to get cleaned. She apologize and so did I but not anyone's fault the other costumer was entitles.. he was also with a child so of course I didn't make a fuss. When I got seated I ordered a strawberry margarita and the street tacos with carne asada. The tortilla was a fresh made one, a little more greasy than I'd like, the carne asada was tender, had great marinade and little chard pieces that gave it more flavor. The salsa that came with them were not too spicy neither and they were also very tasty! Over all I would come back, the food was good and I want to try more.

I ordered a lobster taco with street corn and tried two different margaritas. While the street corn was a bit too sour for my taste, and the margaritas, despite being listed as distinct, tasted quite similar, the calamari was excellent. Overall, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was fantastic. I’d happily give this place 4.5 stars!

This spot is like block from the Padres stadium so you can enjoy a meal and drink before you enter or a drink after. The average cost a plate is $23, I would recommend paying the $2 uncharged for the corn, well worth it, definitely better then rice or beans. For a starter I would get the salsa flight, it comes with 4 salsa a flavor and spice level for everyone. They have outdoor seating with shade cover for those nice days, and great for people watching. Good restaurant decor, a lot of seating plus they also have to bars with seating at both. The quality of the is decent, nothing rave about, but a good spot for an outing with friends.

We found our way into the Blind Burro and really appreciated the food and atmosphere. The place was a zoo because of Comic-Con so we had to expect service would be slower. But our server did well but slow. Food was awesome and we saw a Roper Romp. Woo hoo!

The perfect place to continue the party after a Padres game! We got a nice table for 8 right after a Padres win, sooooooooooooo double win?? Double House margarita with no extra flavor was one of the better margaritas I've had downtown. Service was incredibly quick, the $5 chips and salsa is a great deal and tasty. The menu is on the expensive side, but the two tacos for $20 and a side were huge and enough to satisfy a grown man. The grilled shrimp was fantastic, the Al Pastor seemed more like Asada but was still tasty. The rice was decent but meh, the black beans were good. TJ dog was great, tons of toppings and an ok bun, but $9 was a good price. Burro bowl was huge with added shrimp, and tasty! The service really shined for us so that will keep us coming back!
