Ironsmith is roasting its own beans and building a whole identity around the craft. Gordy's isn't doing that — and it doesn't need to. What Gordy's does is show up at 6am with a cinnamon roll that's still warm and a dirty chai built with enough intention that people who've tried both will tell you, unprompted, that nobody else on this end of San Diego has figured it out yet. That's a different kind of credibility.

The place went through new ownership recently and the difference is tangible: faster service, more consistent pulls on the espresso machine, and pastry recipes that taste like someone actually cares what comes out of the oven. The cinnamon roll is the thing to order — dense, sticky, not shy about it. Get it with the dirty chai and you've made a decision you won't second-guess on the drive down Encinitas Blvd.

The honest caveat: a one-star review worth reading flags that pastries can occasionally skew toward the stale end of the day.
